there is a family across the street from our apartment complex that sells shaved ice out of their garage every friday and saturday. each week, mother, father, sisters, brother, selling sweet ice. sun shining, selling ice, smiling. they sell ice together for their son, brother, who is serving a mormon mission. they sell ice together so he can serve people and God. at four or six, the father removes the 'shaved ice' banner hanging between two palm trees. a pretty daughter puts the last dollop of whipped cream ontop a colorful dessert while her brother stacks surfboards in a large truck. sun shining, together, they climb, mother, father, sisters, brother, into the car, and head towards the sea.
