to compensate for my lack of formal literary education this semester, i've been learning new words from a blog called otherwordly. a recent good find is fernweh, which is defined as "wanderlust, a strong desire for or impulse to wander, or, in modern usage, to travel and explore the world." i've caught this bug. i'm itching to dive into the world and stumble my way through somewhere foreign. i'm getting too comfortable. i need to stretch.

some other great words i highly recommend are:
retrouvaille: the joy of meeting or finding someone again after a long separation; rediscovery
euneirophrenia: the peace of mind that comes from having pleasant dreams
adoxography: beautiful writing on a subject of little or no importance
sehnsucht: "the inconsolable longing in the human heart for what we know not what"; a yearning for a far, familiar, non-earthly land one can identify as one's home

i have bizarre dreams that i remember in almost exact detail. kait and maggie, who have both been my bedmates on different occasions, can testify of this and have endured countless early morning retellings with more patience than i deserve (bless their souls). my dreams are so fluid and vivid that they seem to form a single flowing narrative from one night to the next, with entirely fictional settings and scenarios that i return to time and time again. in my digital anthropology class, we spend a great deal of time discussing the various spaces in which we function as individuals and groups. i have come to recognize and accept the subconscious space of my dreams as one of the many realities in which i participate quite frequently. as i lay down and slip into sleep, i let go of one space and enter another in which i have innovative experiences and creatively recontextualize the world around me. it is a strange and unique feeling to see, hear, touch, or feel something in a dream that i recognize, not from my actual existence, but rather from another dream that i had months or years ago. to return to and visit a place that i created in a dream as a 10-year-old.

happy

on tuesday of last week, my cousin sarah crossed the big blue sea from utah to come visit our island paradise. from the smallest days of our infancy, we have loved being side by side, laughing, napping, adventuring, and the past few days have been no exception. hawaii has led us up mountains, down cliffs, through caves, under waterfalls, and into crashing waves. i feel at home. at home on this rock in the sea and at home with my partner in crime.
film shots from maggie's birthday. miss my mags.
