kauai. was it a dream? when you wake up from this kind of dream-- spectacular, bizarre, at times terrifying, yet incredibly colored with tastes and smells and the most breath-taking sights and feelings you'd forgotten--you sit up, eager to tell every detail the first person that will listen, but when you start you realize you'll never be able to capture the smallest bit of it. theres not enough time and not enough words. your mouth defeats you. thats how i feel. it can't be articulated. its not just a memory, its a feeling. its awe and wonder and happiness and simplicity. its singing amazing grace at the top of waimea canyon, with only mountains painted pink and purple and blue and grey and green and red as your audience. its collapsing into the sand under a setting sun after hiking 11 miles of bone-chilling cliffs. its losing your breath as you plunge into a dimly lit cave, feeling the relentless surge of the ocean underneath the boat and knowing you just cheated death. its friends that start feeling like family. its fires and smores and missionary stories. its clinging to your knees in the bed of the truck, wondering when the road will end and if you'll still be alive when it does, but smiling ear to ear anyways because its all you can do. its martinellis in the hottub. its hippie thanksgiving. its sweet disposition. its the hanalei branch. its laughing until your whole body hurts. yeah, i think it was a dream. one of the ones where you wake up and feel a sad, sorry, almost desperate feeling in your stomach because you know its over and you have to step back into real life. do i really have to step back into real life?
